To be honest, I really didn’t know much about Arizona. In my minds eye, visions of cactus, tumble weed and a bunch of nothingness, left a lot to be desired. It felt too hot there. Sure, maybe later in life we would cruise though there in the RV, check out the canyon, see the desert and that would be good enough.

However, time and time again, friends and family spoke highly about their trips there. My mom was seasoned traveler and racked up thousands of miles road tripping through North American. When asked where her favorite place was, she replied “Arizona… and the deserts around Arizona” I always thought that was a weird answer, but she was not the only one who thought it was special. My good friend Rob Robertson and his wife loved it. Denise and Jan enjoyed their trip. Ali’s dad said it was his favorite state as he drove from coast to coast. Shit, even Anthony Bourdain raved about it. But the crazy thing is, when asked why they liked it, they all kinda said the same thing… “ I don’t know…theres just something cool about it.”

With an answer like that, felt liked we had to go. In the Fall of 2022 we booked tickets and the trip was official. We would be arriving in mid November and had 8 days to cruise and check it out. Ali and I have always enjoy road trips, and this was the desert version. It was new one for us. I just remember feeling happy about doing something different and going to a place that was a true icon of the American West… Arizona.

Part 1

Phoenix to Flagstaff
